So here is my crappy 80s tune. Remember that the sole purpose was figuring out the midi keyboard. I put hardly any time into it so don’t judge me! Also remember that this does not indicate any new direction for my music. Gross. It’s strictly for research and lols.

Kia ora,

It’s me, Cods. I’m in England, which is pretty out of it. I’m here for several reasons and, it feels like, kind of no reason at all. I’m hanging out with my sister and my little nephew, I’m gonna meet up with some industry types, some friends, do a gig or two, go traveling in the place called Europe and, hopefully, I’m gonna write some new songs.

I’ve come as prepared as my luggage allowance would allow for a musical time; I bought a new laptop, I have an mbox, 2 guitars, one microphone and some big ass headphones. Upon arrival I found that my BIL (brother in law) has a midi keyboard. Excellent! I’ve not really been interested in making computer-music in the past. My catch phrase was always “It’s all techno to me, mate”, and also “Where’s the dang guitars?”. Ha. But of course we all change our minds about things over time.*

This is my third or so foray into using midi, and for some reason I always find it lolz. Those little squares all over the place! I think it’s because of that visual aspect that every time I get to experimenting with it all I can manage is to make hilarious 80s sounding tunes. And that is the extent of my musical exploration so far in Maidenhead, England. I’ve made one of those.

My room here fits a bed and one dresser, and I have jammed my tools on and around these. I have a view out a small window to red brick and Tudor-style houses, leafless trees, and grey or blue or combination skies. I sense that all these restrictions- on space, equipment, view, and time (I’m here for 2 months)- are actually gonna help. I am a fan of making do, and I know that too many options and to much time sometimes mean you never finish anything. But I want some new songs please, Universe.

So why am I writing about this here? Well here is a list of reasons and you can guess which apply, if you want (there is no prize, of course):::

  • I feel like it
  • It’s a blog! Everyone has a blog these days
  • I value my fans and want to keep them up to date
  • I have a huge ego and think it’s important for everyone to know what I’m doing and thinking at every moment, and occasionally with more detail than is appropriate on Facebook, Twitter and all the other internet jerk-joints
  • I have too much time on my hands
  • All/Other

I’ll post my terrible 80s tune for a laugh. Well, I think it’s funny anyway.

*Don’t worry!!! I’m not gonna make a techno album- it’s still not my vibe. But I’m getting to that point where I’ve mined the same timbres and ideas for all they’re worth, so it’s time to add to those. I watched a Neil Young documentary and when he said “How many sensitive songs can you write before you’re just writing a sensitive song?” I said “Yes. Exactly, Neil Young”.

Hunger eventually won out in the battle against laziness, with the help of a bubbly stoke gold beer. I heart life.

^ That’s a link up there if you couldn’t tell. It will take you to some info about a gig that I’m really looking forward to playing this weekend. It’s Don McGlashan (the Don!), Julia Deans, and me (me! Doing a gig with them! Too much). We’ve been rehearsing our asses off the last couple of days 10am-5pm, and will do so again today, jamming up versions of songs that got us into music (Michael Jackson of course), songs we wish we’d written, and other stuff including the song we’d like to leave behind as our legacy (makes it sound like we’re really important). We’ve sussed out some pretty good versions.

It’s sold out so don’t worry about going to buy tickets or nothing. Just wanted to say I’m excited. We are putting in maximum aroha for shaky Christchurch and we’re gonna sing our little hearts out. And I get to play drums! Won’t give anything else away in case you’re coming. If I can be bothered I’ll write about how it goes.

P.S. I like tumblr. It’s good for when you wanna write something that takes more than 140 characters, which for me is most of the time.

P.P.S. What about neutrinos that can maybe travel faster than light?!!! Faaaar.
